A hobby for the sake of it
I need a hobby.
No really, I don’t think I have one.
I think it’s because these days, there’s this pressure to monetize everything you’re good at.
Love to draw? Sell your art on Etsy. Expert copywriter? Teach a course on copywriting. Have a knack for photography? Take portraits on the side.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love the ambition. But seriously, whatever happened to doing something just for yourself? Simply because you enjoy it. Just because it fills your cup.
Listen, there will always be opportunities to turn a hobby into a job, and sometimes it makes sense. But there’s a caveat: it can’t be considered your hobby anymore.
A hobby is defined as “something done in leisure for someone’s pleasure.” You may love what you do, but if your livelihood depends on it, it can’t be leisurely.
To have a true hobby, the stakes have to remain low.
– Taking the photos solely for the memories.
– Baking the cake simply because you have a taste for it.
– Singing the song for yourself, not the audience.
You and me, we need hobbies to refuel us.
So we can return to our other obligations knowing some things remain sacred – without results attached.
